Day 6


After we woke up on Tuesday, we were able to analyze Crucero’s water situation. We saw their cistern, their well, and heard a bit more about their struggles with water. We were then invited into the home of a mother in the community. There we were able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and locally made ice creams. After lunch and a bit of rest we then presented for El Club de Madres. This is an inspiring club of women in Crucero who are the driving force behind most change in the community. This club is funded by the members and is able to help if anyone in the community is faced with unexpected troubles. After presenting and socializing with this wonderful group of mothers we headed back to the villa where we spent the rest of the night.

Thursday Travels to a welcoming land

After uneventful flights we landed in the city of Santiago near the north coast of the island. We apparently are good at choosing the slowest lines because the group seemed the last from our flight to exit the airport. There we experienced a surprisingly effortless triple rendezvous: 1) Karis, who had arrived 12 hours earlier completed our group, 2) Kimberley Verhulst was waiting with a driver and van to take us Jarabacoa, and 3) Young Sung’s mom was ready with fresh kimbap for our hungry selves. Muy delicioso! Our accommodations are wonderful with a lovely patio area for eating and relaxing. Everyone went to bed early in anticipation of the new day sun and roosters.

Day 4 - Sunday’s Rest

It’s rare to be able to sleep in, but today was one of those occurrences! We had a nice slow morning with breakfast in bed (creds to the thoughtful, personal service of one of our team members) and then we went to church in Jarabacoa. We attended a bilingual service that was almost half a hour away. Surprisingly, we met a group of mothers and daughters from Wheaton, Illinois. Even though the power would cut out at times during the service, we were all very much blessed by the sermon and the worship. We also had the chance to take communion!
